July 28—ATHERTON — A home on the 200 block of Polhemus Avenue was apparently burglarized Friday night, according to police.

An alarm company called police around 9 p.m., said Sgt. Anthony Kockler of the Atherton Police Department. Responding officers found a smashed second-story window and spotted a rock among the shards of glass. It wasn’t immediately clear whether anything was stolen.

The apparent burglary is the second involving a smashed window in less than two months. On June 17, a paving stone was through a window of a home on Alameda de las Pulgas. Cash and jewelry were taken. A suspect has not been identified.

Kockler said residents can protect their homes by using an alarm system, keeping exterior lights on when it is dark outside, and hooking up interior lights, radios and televisions to timers when they are away. Drapes and blinds should also be closed to conceal valuables from prying eyes.

“Let your neighbors know when you are going away,” said Kockler. “And if you are home and see anything suspicious, call the police department. And, make sure, if you leave the house, everything is locked and secured — the doors, window, the garage door.”

The Atherton Police Department number is 650-688-6500.
