July 28—This is the final deadline week for those who have a legal reason to vote absentee, according to Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson.

The deadline is Saturday, from 8 a.m.- noon to accommodate those voters unable to come in during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Johnson said.

Circuit clerks across the state are reminding voters to check their calendar to make sure they will be in town or not have a conflict — such as scheduled surgery, a convention or conference, or active duty — for the Aug. 4 primary election.

Mississippi does not have early voting, but instead has absentee voting, whereas a legal reason is required to vote.

“The majority of absentee voters legal reason is that they will be out of town on Election Day, whether vacation or work related,” Johnson said.

Also, voters who work during poll hours — from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. — and cannot get to their precinct on Election Day (such as individuals who work in the health field, railroad, route salesmen, truck drivers) will benefit from this process, Johnson said.

Voters are encouraged to go to their county courthouse before Saturday to avoid waiting in line.
