ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) - Authorities say an elderly driver in Vermont is OK after his car plowed into Lake Champlain.

WCAX-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1JrxAXy ) it happened at Hathaway Point in the town of St. Albans on Monday.

The man told police he fell asleep at the wheel before heading for the water. Emergency officials say some trees on the shorelines may have prevented the accident from becoming much worse.

Officials say he hit the trees, which slowed him down and might have kept him from going farther into the lake.

Authorities are investigating the crash. They say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
