July 28—A Boulder police officer shot and killed a man in the stairwell of an apartment building on 19th Street on Monday night after responding to a report that someone high on LSD had attacked residents with a knife.

According to Boulder police, a resident of an apartment at 1841 19th St. called 911 shortly after 10:30 p.m. to report the suspect was acting erratically and was currently outside the apartment, screaming.

When officers arrived, police said, they found a victim with cuts to his face. As they made their way up the stairwell to the apartment, they confronted the suspect, who was naked.

One officer shot the suspect with a Taser, police said, but it failed to subdue him. A second officer fired his gun, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inside the apartment, police found a 23-year-old man who suffered multiple knife wounds, including a six-inch cut to his forehead, as well as a bite on his hand, police said.

He was transported to Boulder Community Health and was listed in good condition early this morning, police said.

The officer who shot the suspect will be placed on leave with pay until the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office completes its review of the shooting.

The shooting is under investigation by the Boulder County Investigative Team, a multi-jurisdictional unit that will report its findings to the DA and the Boulder police chief.

This is the fourth officer-involved shooting in Boulder since 2008.
