July 28—A Pueblo Chieftain driver was killed early Monday after hitting an elk, the Colorado State Patrol reported.

The patrol said that Ronnie Trujillo, 43, of Pueblo struck an elk on Interstate 25, about 16 miles south of Pueblo at 12:35 a.m.

The patrol said Trujillo was driving a 2013 Ford E-250 van southbound on I-25, when it collided with an elk that was crossing the road. After impact with the elk, the Ford went off the left side of the road and rolled 1 1/2 times, coming to rest on its roof facing west. The elk came to rest in the right-hand lane of traffic.

The patrol said Trujillo was unrestrained at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead by the Pueblo County coroner.

The patrol said that alcohol and drug use are not suspected. The investigation is continuing.

Trujillo is survived by his wife and five children. He had worked for the paper for about two years.
