July 28—CUMBERLAND — Assault and burglary charges have been filed against a Cumberland man who allegedly broke into a residence on Independent Street and then assaulted a female occupant, Cumberland Police said.

Joseph Adam Haines, 24, was charged with first-, third-, and fourth-degree burglary, second-degree assault, malicious destruction of property and theft less than $1,000 in connection with the July 23, 2015 complaint.

Police said investigation determined the victim was in her bedroom with her son when the accused kicked in the front door, came upstairs and forced open her bedroom door. The victim said she was then grabbed by the throat by the accused. A second suspect then assisted the alleged assailant by taking the victim’s cell phone.

Both suspects ran from the are before police arrived.

Haines was charged in an arrest warrant Monday and was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.

Charges are pending against the second suspect, police said.
