July 28—A dump truck lost its power and steering on Route 22 in Gorham Tuesday morning, causing traffic backups for hours as crews investigated and removed the truck.

The Gorham Sand & Gravel truck being driven by Thomas Brooks, 56, of Standish crashed around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday after the truck lost power, causing it to lose its brakes and steering. The truck crashed into a tree but Brooks was not injured, according to Gorham police.

Police said Brooks hit the soft road shoulder as he tried to stop the truck, causing it to go down a ditch and into a tree.

Gorham police and the Maine State Police Commercial Division continue to investigate the accident.

Route 22 was reopened around noon.
