July 28—CRESTONE — A Denver man died Friday after falling more than 800 feet in an area near Crestone Peak. Christopher Kiryluk, 34, was pronounced dead Friday afternoon at the incident command headquarters near Crestone, Saguache County Sheriff Dan Warwick said.

Kiryluk was in a party of 12 hikers and fell in an area known as Red Gully, the sheriff said. Warwick praised the search teams from Saguache, Custer and Gunnison counties who attempted to reach Kiryluk.

But the difficult terrain required a helicopter to retrieve him off the mountain. Warwick said it was the second time in two weeks there had been a fall in that area.
