July 28—A 42-year-old man drowned in the south-end inlet of Pawleys Island Monday night, according to Michael Fanning, Pawleys Island police chief.

Gabriel Lewis of Myrtle Beach died after drowning while swimming during high tide in the south-end inlet where the creek meets the ocean, Fanning said.

Lewis was pulled from the creek about 5:56 p.m. Monday, and someone attempted to do CPR on him, Fanning said.

Midway Fire Rescue workers arrived and also attempted CPR before Lewis was taken to the hospital.

Lewis was pronounced dead at Waccamaw hospital at 7 p.m., Fanning said.

“Please exercise caution while swimming at all times,” said a Pawleys Island police official in a statement on Twitter Tuesday morning.
