July 28—WILMINGTON — A convicted sex offender pleaded guilty Monday to his part in a 2012 shooting in Hillcrest.

Lamar Maurice Walker, 35, entered guilty pleas to assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to three to 4 3/4 years in prison.

According to a news release from the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office, Walker encouraged Pedro Lopez, 35, to shoot Brian Sidberry on Sept. 13, 2012.

“Walker sent a text message a few moments before the shooting to a witness at the scene, stating ‘Since y’all want to play watch (expletive) get ugly n I dn’t gotta lift a finger,’” the release states. Walker told detectives that he was not in the area at the time of the shooting, but telephone records placed him nearby.

Lopez pleaded guilty to several charges including attempted first-degree murder on March 24, 2014 and was sentenced to 15.5 to 20 years in prison.

Walker was previously convicted of indecent liberties with a child in 2001 in New Hanover County Superior Court. He has been registered as a sex offender since that date.
