July 28—HARRISON COUNTY — One person is dead and another in critical condition after a car flipped into a tree and caught fire on Highway 53 early Tuesday morning, officials said.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said the accident happened at 12:30 a.m. when a vehicle failed to negotiate a turn on the highway and ran off the road into a ditch.

“The vehicle went airborne and hit a tree breaking several limbs,” Hargrove said. “It then crashed into a telephone pole before coming to a stop.”

Hargrove said the female driver was ejected from the vehicle.

“The vehicle caught fire shortly after hitting the telephone pole,” he said. “A male passenger was pronounced dead on the scene.”

The driver was taken to Garden Park Hospital before being taken to University of South Alabama Medical Center.

Identities of those involved are not being released at this time.

Officials are on the scene to repair the downed telephone pole and expect the area to be closed off to traffic for the next several hours.
