July 28—REDWOOD CITY — A San Mateo woman accused of stealing more than $1 million from Creekside Landscaping Inc. in Menlo Park has pleaded not guilty, according to prosecutors.

Shannon Cardenas, 39, was arraigned Friday on felony charges including embezzlement and identity theft.

The business owners discovered the alleged crimes after Cardenas, the office manager for the past two years, abruptly quit in March. She wrote and signed company checks to give herself overtime and bonuses, as well as to pay her rent, according to prosecutors.

Cardenas also allegedly used company credit cards to purchase trips, vehicles and other personal items.

Following a months-long investigation, detectives with the Menlo Park Police Department obtained a warrant and arrested Cardenas at her new job in Redwood City on Thursday.

A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 6, according to prosecutors.

Cardenas remains in custody on $500,000 bond. The Private Defender Panel has been appointed to represent her.
