SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - A community safety night is scheduled for residents in the Detroit suburb of Southfield.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Make It Happen Martial Arts! and includes speakers and a self-defense training demonstration.

Event coordinator James Jackson says being vigilant and aware of one’s surroundings, and a person’s role in regard to their own safety will be stressed.

A member of Crime Stoppers of Michigan also will attend the event.

Crime Stoppers spokeswoman Shirley Schuler says “crime really happens all over” and such events educate the community about the anonymous tip program.
