July 28—A man who allegedly took a bus trip from Austin to Laredo to have sex with an undercover agent he thought to be a 14-year-old girl was recently indicted, according to an affidavit.

On July 21, Steven Ray Alvarez, 25, was indicted on a charge of coercion and enticement, which carries a punishment of 10 years to life in prison.

Alvarez, who remains in federal detention, is set to be arraigned Thursday.

Federal agents began an investigation into Alvarez in mid-June.

He is accused of sending inappropriate text messages and emails to a 14-year-old girl from June 17 to July 1.

Those electronics communications detailed his plans to have sex with an underage girl, according to Homeland Security Investigations.

A criminal complaint filed July 2 alleges that Alvarez agreed to meet with the girl to have sex with her.

That’s when Alvarez got on a Greyhound bus in Austin to come to Laredo.

Once in the Gateway City, special agents took him into custody with the assistance of Laredo police and the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.

Alvarez agreed to speak to authorities following his arrest, records state.

He allegedly “acknowledged that he sent sexually explicit communications” to a person he thought to be 14 years old, according to court documents.
