July 28—Court documents show Donald Ray Bailey, 54, of 602 Rosedale Drive, has been charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. He was placed in the Davidson County Detention Center on Monday under a $150,000 secured bond.

Capt. Robert Miller of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said his agency received multiple calls that Bailey had picked up Greene on Old U.S. Highway 52 in Welcome. Bailey, an acquaintance of Greene, is accused of driving the homicide suspect to Piedmont Drive, where Greene was arrested.

Greene, 48, of 1100 Piedmont Drive, has been charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and larceny of a motor vehicle. He was placed in the Davidson County Detention Center on Monday under no bond.

Greene is alleged to have robbed the Exxon at 4222 W. Center St. Ext about 7:15 a.m. Monday. Deputies arrived on the scene to find the owner of the store, Sajjad Nawaz, dead in his business from an apparent gunshot wound. Greene is accused of fleeing in Nawaz’s vehicle after taking an undisclosed amount of cash. The vehicle was found at Center United Methodist Church in Welcome.

A short time later after the robbery, Lexington Police and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation assisted the DCSO in making Greene’s arrest. Court documents show Greene has been previously convicted of manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in West Virginia.

Miller said the DCSO has several other “associates” they are talking to in regard to the case. But there are no other charges at this time, the captain said.

While the DCSO has made two arrests in the case, Nawaz’s family mourns. In an interview with The Dispatch on Monday, they described Nawaz, who went by the nickname of Tom Chaudhery, as being polite and nice. Nawaz and his cousins owned several convenience stores in the Triad. Nawaz’s family said he never had any problems with anyone in or outside of the family.

Greene and Bailey each have Aug. 24 court dates.
