July 28—An 11-year-old boy is accused of choking a 4-year-old early Monday morning at a home in Palatka, deputies said.

The 4-year-old boy wasn’t breathing when deputies were called about 4 a.m. to the mobile home in the Westover Trailer Park, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies immediately started rescue measures until emergency medical crews arrived.

The boy was then taken to a Gainesville hospital in critical condition, the Sheriff’s Office said.

As of about 10 a.m. today, his condition remained the same, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Dick Schauland said.

Deputies said the boy had marks on his neck, indicating he had been choked.

Through investigation, deputies determined an 11-year-old boy, who was also living at the home, was a possible suspect. The boy has been arrested on a charge of aggravated battery resulting in serious damage.

The 11-year-old is being held a juvenile detention center in Gainesville.

Deputies said there were 12 people — six adults and six children ranging from one to 11 years old — living in the mobile home at the time.

It’s unclear what led up to the incident.
