July 28—RINDGE — Police say they believe the driver of a vehicle that took out two benches at the town common early Saturday was involved in two other motor vehicle crashes that same day.

Rindge Police Chief Todd Muilenberg said this morning a vehicle coming from Main Street or Payson Hill Road drove through the common and destroyed the two benches.

“There’s not really a good reason to do that,” Muilenberg said. “We don’t know his intent at this point.”

The damage was reported to police at 6:30 a.m., about four and a half hours after Rindge police responded to a separate motor vehicle crash on Thomas Road, Muilenberg said.

The driver in that incident failed to negotiate a turn, drove into some trees and was unable to back out of a ditch so continued to drive forward through a homeowner’s property, according to Muilenberg. The driver left the scene before police arrived, he said.

Muilenberg said police believe the driver involved in both Rindge incidents was later arrested in connection with a third motor vehicle crash in Winchendon, Mass.

Rindge police have issued a warrant for the man’s arrest and said they will release more information when he’s taken into custody.
