HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - An Etowah man has been sentenced to at least 16 years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his father.

Multiple media outlets report that 46-year-old Michael S. Walker was sentenced Monday in Henderson County Superior Court for second-degree murder in the Jan. 2013 death of 72-year-old Gerald Walker, who was beaten to death on the floor of his son’s condominium.

Michael Walker’s attorney, Mara Mayer, says her client had been suffering from bouts of depression and mental illness.

Mayer says her client believed his father was possessed by demons.

Michael Walker was initially charged with first-degree murder, but District Attorney Greg Newman says his office offered the plea deal because there wasn’t enough evidence to show premeditation for the murder.
