IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A former field hockey coach who was fired at the University of Iowa last year has filed a state civil rights complaint.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (https://icp-c.com/1OMNo7D ) that Tracey Griesbaum’s action is a step toward filing a lawsuit. Her attorney, Tom Newkirk, told the newspaper that he and Griesbaum have exhausted efforts “to get the university to investigate and remedy this without a lawsuit.”

Griesbaum has said gender bias under athletics director Gary Barta led to her firing.

University spokeswoman Jeneane Beck said Monday the university will cooperate with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission investigation. The university has said Barta’s decision to fire Griesbaum was not related to gender, but tied to an investigation into player complaints against her.
