July 28—The Nuttall Fire Department in Fayette County is one of several area fire departments to receive a Firefighting Support Grant from West Virginia American Water.

The water company has awarded $10,000 across its service areas to help local fire departments purchase emergency gear, life-saving equipment, training materials and essential firefighting apparatus.

“This annual initiative demonstrates our appreciation for the men and women who serve in our local fire departments and remain dedicated 24/7 to the communities where our customers and our employees live and work,” said West Virginia American Water president Jeff McIntyre. “West Virginia American Water is very pleased to support organizations that have such integral ties with both the community and the water industry.”

Nuttall received $400 to help purchase swift water rescue equipment, including rescue helmets, swift water vests, whistles and raft knives.

Several fire departments in Mercer County were also chosen. Bluestone Valley Volunteer Fire Department received $500 to purchase portable scene lights for use during emergency situation in various weather. Princeton Fire Department was awarded $500 to purchase two 2.5-inch gated water valves for fire tanker trucks. Matoaka Area Volunteer Fire Department received $500 to help equip a new fire engine with suppression equipment, including additional water appliances, adapters for large diameter hose, hand tools and foam suppressing appliances. Lastly, Oakvale Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $400 to help replace sections of worn fire hose, allowing the department to meet current safety requirements.

Fifteen grant recipients were chosen from 46 applications.
