CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - John D. Smith Jr. has been named managing editor of The Cumberland Times-News.

Publisher Robin L. Quillon announced Smith’s appointment on Tuesday, according to The Times-News’ (https://bit.ly/1fEUHlm).

Smith joined the newspaper in 1989, and has been the news editor, overseeing page design and production, since 1992.

Smith earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from West Virginia University. He lives in Fort Ashby, West Virginia.

Smith’s appointment is effective on Saturday. He succeeds Jan Alderton, who retired in June.
