GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) - A 27-year-old man has been convicted in the 2013 fatal shooting of his girlfriend inside their upstate New York home.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports (https://bit.ly/1SKBds8 ) a jury found Christian Benson guilty of second-degree manslaughter on Monday in the August 2013 shooting death of 30-year-old Kristi Babcock at their Cornwall home.

Benson and Babcock were handling a pistol he bought earlier in the day. Prosecutors say Benson was showing her the gun with his finger on the trigger when the gun discharged and fired a bullet into Babcock’s chest.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Milza says Benson showed “utter disregard” for the basics of gun safety.

Attorney Craig Brown says Babcock’s family is satisfied with the verdict.

Benson will be sentenced on Sept. 16.
