LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A 10-year veteran of the Indiana State Police has been recognized nationally for his actions saving three people from a burning home.

The agency says the American Association of State Troopers has named Senior Trooper Joseph Winters its 2015 national Trooper of the Year. Winters will receive the award at a ceremony on August 3 at the Lafayette State Police Post.

It says Winters was leaving for work on April 10, 2014, when he noticed his elderly neighbors’ house on fire. He headed inside, found their 11-year-old grandson sleeping on a couch, and took the boy outside. He then re-entered the home and awakened the couple and helped them outside. When the older male re-entered the burning home, Winters again helped the man to safety.
