July 28—LAS CRUCES — A man suspected of breaking into and burglarizing an apartment Sunday morning was interrupted when the 19-year-old female tenant walked in on him, the Las Cruces Police Department reported Monday.

According to an LCPD news release, Jason J. Cadney, 31, of the 1300 block of Pecos Street, is charged with one count of aggravated burglary.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of an assault with injuries at 2400 Espina St. Officers learned that a 19-year-old woman, a tenant of one of the apartments, was at a neighboring apartment when she noticed the door to her residence was open and a light was on.

Believing her boyfriend had arrived home, the woman went to her apartment, according to police, but she instead found Cadney inside, rummaging through her belongings.

The woman recognized Cadney as an acquaintance, the release said.

When the woman ordered Cadney out of the apartment, he allegedly grabbed the woman’s hair and dragged her toward the parking lot, the release said. The woman screamed and fought with Cadney, tearing a T-shirt he was wearing, according to the report.

Police believe Cadney then fled the area, the release said. Officers found Cadney a short while later.

He was detained for questioning and later charged with aggravated burglary, a second-degree felony. Additional charges against Cadney are possible, according to police.

Cadney was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center, where he was initially held without bond.
