FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) - Helicopters flown by an aviation unit based at Fort Drum will be making their final flight over northern New York before they’re taken out of service.

The Army is reducing the number of active aviation brigades and cutting the number of helicopter models it uses from seven to four. Among those being divested are the OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopters flown by the 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation of the 10th Mountain Division.

Officials at Fort Drum say the unit’s Kiowas will make their final flight over the Army post and the surrounding North Country communities on Tuesday afternoon.

The aircraft arrived at Fort Drum 20 years ago. The squadron deployed four times to Afghanistan and once to Iraq.
