July 28—TUPELO — A Tupelo man and a 17-year-old male are in custody after a pursuit in north Tupelo Saturday night.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said around 11:30 Saturday night, deputies spotted a vehicle reported stolen days before in Mooreville. When deputies tried to stop the maroon Jeep on Barnes Crossing Road, it sped away.

“They fled east, went through the stop sign at Veterans Road and kept going east until the road dead ended,” Johnson said. “They rammed a gate and went down a muddy logging road and basically buried the vehicle in a very muddy area.”

The suspects ran into the woods but were captured around 3 a.m. when they approached a house and asked for water.

Cody Wayne Nance, 26, of Tupelo, was charged with burglary and grand larceny. During his initial appearance, Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland set bond at $100,000. The teen, who was driving, is being charged with felony eluding in youth court.

Nance is accused of breaking into a house on Drive 1209 on July 23 and stealing the keys to the 1996 Jeep Cherokee.

“He is currently on probation for burglary and taking a vehicle,” Johnson said. “He has two previous instances of breaking into houses and taking keys.”
