AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Federal authorities are investigating a fire that gutted a church in Auburn.

The Opelika-Auburn News reported Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1U4iBWB ) that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is probing a fire that destroyed the St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.

ATF spokesman Michael P. Knight says the agency investigates all fires at houses of worship and is working in partnership with the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Auburn Police Department.

Knight says authorities are also checking the Bomb Arson Tracking System to find out if the fire is similar to others throughout the country.
