July 28—Horry County police said several types of drugs, including crack and marijuana, were allegedly found on a man who authorities said crashed his car into a ditch then ran in an attempt to escape police, according to an incident report.

Michael Anthony Williams, 42, of Conway was charged with possession with intent to distribute third offense, two counts of distribution of cocaine third offense, open container in a motor vehicle, and failure to stop for blue lights, according to Lt. Raul Denis, spokesman with Horry County police.

While on patrol about 2:17 a.m. Sunday in the area of U.S. 701 South, an officer said he noticed a white Cadillac Sedan swerve into the southbound lane while traveling northbound.

The officer said he saw the Sedan swerve into the southbound lane multiple times and turned on his blue lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

A chase ensued when police said Williams turned off U.S. 701 South onto Winburn Road and increased his speed, and another nearby officer got involved as well, according to the report.

Police said Williams lost control of the vehicle when he hit an unpaved section of Winburn Road and veered off into a ditch.

Authorities said Williams’ vehicle skipped back onto the roadway and went into a ditch again, but Williams finally came to a stop in the roadway.

Police said Williams got out of the car and ran toward a wooded area and allegedly dropped a green container while trying to escape, but then complied with officers who ordered him to stop and get on the ground.

Authorities said they recovered the container they allegedly saw Williams throw while running and said inside they found 23 small, plastic bags of methamphetamine, 21 small bags of marijuana, and cocaine base/crack, according to the report.

Police also said they found a half-empty bottle of wine and wine glass in Williams’ car in the front seat area.

South Carolina Highway Patrol deputies were called to investigate the crash, and Horry County Fire Rescue workers were called to examine Williams’ injuries, which consisted of a small cut on his lip, police said.

Williams was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Sunday and was released Monday.

The amount of his bail was not listed in records available on the jail website.
