CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) - A man charged in the death of his girlfriend has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1GXML4J ) that 40-year-old Alfredo Martin Martinez was sentenced Monday for the August death of 36-year-old Selena Thomas. The Nampa man had pleaded guilty to a murder charge.

In court Monday, Thomas’ mom described her daughter’s relationship with Martinez. She accused Martinez of being jealous and controlling.

Martinez had a violent history, which included multiple prior domestic violence charges and a no-contact order violation.

Martinez had reportedly beaten Thomas over the head with a metal hammer and then buried her lifeless body in a cornfield near Melba. She died of blunt force trauma.

Martinez apologized multiple times in court, saying he never intended to kill Thomas.
