July 28—Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell seeks the public’s help in locating a wanted suspect.

Thomas Wayne Hersey, 41, of River Road, faces several meth-related charges, including new ones incurred Sunday, the sheriff explained.

He said that on Sunday morning, Deputy Derek Eubanks and Williamsburg Police Sgt. Brandon White went to the residence where Hersey was believed to be living.

Harrell said authorities wanted to serve Hersey with a warrant unrelated to these latest offenses.

Prior information provided to the sheriff’s department alleged methamphetamine was being made — and subsequently sold — by Hersey from a tag-a-long camper near the very end of River Road.

Harrell said when authorities approached the camper — Hersey fled into the woods.

But Harrell alleged Hersey left behind evidence showing meth was indeed being manufactured in the camper. Several one-step meth labs and ingredients used to make meth were clearly visible throughout the camper, the sheriff added.

Also found was a loaded .22 caliber handgun, which Hersey was not permitted to have due to his criminal history.

“This man already had a warrant for his arrest, and he ran,” Harrell said. “Now he’s facing more charges.”

Harrell said this is not the first time Hersey has disappeared this way.

“His last attempt to evade authorities didn’t last very long,” the sheriff said. “We hope information from the public can make sure he’s behind bars soon.”

In April 2014, Harrel said that Sgt. Kirk Mays arrested Hersey in connection with a crash two days prior on KY-204 near Gibson Lane — which included finding a meth lab in the trunk.

Harrell said that witnesses at the scene of that crash said two suspects fled, and in the interest of safety from the meth contaminants — the highway closed for more than two hours.

Harrell asks that anyone with knowledge of Hersey’s whereabouts call Whitley County E911 at (606) 549-6017.
