July 28—Detectives say an

81-year-old man was

killed in his residence

FAIRMONT — After a month of investigating, detectives say Howard Russell Wright was murdered in his residence on June 26.

Detective Kevin Alkire with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Monday that the 81-year-old Mannington resident was murdered last month. Alkire said he is not releasing how Wright was murdered at this time.

On June 26, the sheriff’s department responded to a structure fire report at 1341 Curtisville Road in Mannington. On the day of the incident, Detective Chip Phillips with the sheriff’s department said when crews arrived on scene the fire had burnt itself out but Wright was located in the residence and pronounced dead on scene.

Alkire said throughout the investigation of the incident it was determined that Wright was murdered. He said the investigation is still ongoing and no one has been charged in connection to the crime at this time.

Chief Deputy Ralph Wright, with the sheriff’s department, said the victim lived alone in the residence.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department is asking for assistance from the public on the incident. If anyone was in the area on June 26 or the night before and noticed suspicious activity, they are asked to call the department at 304-367-5300.

Callers can remain anonymous.
