POINTE A LA HACHE, La. (AP) - A mother and her 4-year-old son have been killed in a head-on collision in Plaquemines Parish that has left a child in another vehicle critically injured.

Plaquemines Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Eric Becnel tells local media that 25-year-old Jenny Taing and her 4-year-old son died in the Monday afternoon crash.

Becnel says Taing was traveling north on Louisiana Highway 23 when she, for unknown reasons, crossed into the southbound lane and crashed into an SUV.

State Police Trooper Dustin Dwight says, as of Monday evening, that a 6-year-old boy who was a passenger in the SUV was in critical condition. The driver of the SUV, 38-year-old William Weidner, suffered minor injuries.

Authorities say they do not expect either driver was impaired, but blood samples were taken and will be analyzed by investigators.
