PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The largest lineup of electric car quick-charging stations in downtown Portland is open for business.

The project by Portland General Electric features six charging stations, including four universal quick chargers that can recharge a typical electric vehicle in 30 minutes.

Dubbed Electric Avenue, the charging facility is outside PGE’s headquarters in the World Trade Center building, moved there from its previous location on the Portland State University campus.

There are an estimated 4,000 electric car drivers in the Portland area. Proponents say the vehicles offer environmental benefits and lower operating costs than gasoline-powered cars.

Oregon has more than 900 public charging stations for electric cars, trucks, motorcycles and electric bikes.
