SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - The new owner of a struggling northeastern Pennsylvania mall says his ultimate goal is its revitalization.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1SL8h3p ) reports that real estate developer and commercial roofer John Basalyga has reiterated his intention to revive the Mall at Steamtown in Scranton rather than develop something else on the property.

Basalyga calls the mall “important Scranton landmark” and says he’s determined to make it thrive. A spokesman says there are currently no plans to alter the approximately 559,000-square-foot mall.

Basalyga owns Eastern Roofing Systems Inc., which installs roofs on commercial and industrial buildings in a dozen states. He purchased the mall for a little over $5.5 million at a sheriff’s sale in June.

Basalyga says the mall’s success will require a long-term commitment, reinvestment, imagination and hard work.
