July 28—MONTROSE — Three new part-time positions will be voted on this morning during the Lee County supervisor’s meeting at the sheriff’s office.

Treasurer Chris Spann and recorder Nancy Booten asked for part-time employees to help cover short-handed staffs and special projects last week. When the county departments consolidated to one office in June 2011, they didn’t replace people who retired.

“I don’t see how they justify losing two people when they are still serving the same number of people,” Spann said last week when she made the request.

They estimated the new employees would cost $13,000 each. Spann has requested to have two part timers, while Booten has requested one.

While some of the supervisors seemed on board, others questioned if the county could afford it.

“At some point, we need to draw the line. Do people want their taxes hiked more, or do we provide more people in our departments?” Fedler said.

Supervisor Gary Folluo said the idea is to provide better customer service.

“Our job is to provide services, and that’s what we’re trying to get here,” Folluo said.

Spann said regardless of the supervisors’ decision, she plans to expand the Keokuk services. Earlier this year, she brought a drivers license station to Keokuk on Wednesdays and Fridays, and she said in September she plans to also begin processing vehicle tags in the southern county seat.

“It doesn’t matter if I have a new person or not, I’m going to expand those services,” Spann said.

While Spann’s part timer would be permanent, Booten said hers potentially could be temporary. Booten took on the process of digitalizing her office’s microfiche films and due to low staff, has not been able to complete the task.
