July 28—The Whitman County SWAT Team was called to the Quality Inn on Bishop Boulevard in Pullman at about 2:30 p.m. Monday to take a man who was allegedly threatening others into protective custody.

Pullman Police Operations Cmdr. Chris Tennant said the man was “mentally unstable” and police were contacted by people who knew the man who were worried about his well-being. Tennant said those same individuals told police the man had a history with firearms.

The man allegedly refused to exit his hotel room when police asked him to come outside. Crisis negotiators from the Moscow Police Department were called to the scene and helped convince the man through a telephone conversation to exit the room.

The man was taken into protective custody shortly after 4 p.m. He was transported to Pullman Regional Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Tennant said the man is a former Moscow resident, but was most recently living in Montana. He said it’s believed the man was back in the area to visit or stay family in Moscow. Police declined to release his name.

Tennant said the SWAT team, which ordinarily wouldn’t have been dispatched to such a situation, was called to the scene due to the man’s alleged history with firearms, the potential for firearms in the hotel room and based on the man’s mental state.

Hotel rooms surrounding the man’s room were evacuated.

Brandon Ward, who was working the front desk at the hotel when the incident occurred, said he never felt in danger. Ward said about three police officers had come to check on the man Sunday afternoon after family told police they were concerned about his well-being.

He said the man was staying at the hotel because he was waiting to get his car fixed.

Tennant said the police did a sweep of the room but found no sign of weapons. He said police are working to retrieve a search warrant for the room.

It took about 12 officers to resolve the situation.
