July 28—Three men have been arrested in the June 23 killing of a Cornelius man in the 400 block of Jetton Street in Davidson, police said Tuesday.

Jerry Wayne “Junior” Kerns Jr. died of a gunshot wound, Davidson Police Chief Jeanne Miller said.

Charged with first-degree murder were Frederick Jamar Cherry, 25, of Mooresville, Gercobe Arnell McClain Jr., 28, of Davidson, and Rupen Bhagvan Patel, 26, of Mooresville.

The shooting — the town’s second homicide in a decade — happened around 9 p.m. Police have not released what they believe led to the shooting.

Close family friends have told WBTV, the Observer’s media partner, that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Kerns and another man.

In a statement Tuesday, Miller thanked residents, and family and friends of the victim, “for their support and cooperation in working with us to find justice for Jerry Kerns. We would like to acknowledge that this arrest has been a great collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies in the county and state.”

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police Sgt. Steve Ingram at 704-892-5131.

Davidson’s last reported homicide was last July. Police have never publicly identified a suspect in the fatal shooting last July of Sarah Long, 41. She was found dead in her bedroom clutching a .357 Taurus revolver in her left hand, records show. Police said Long was right-handed.

The mystery surrounding her death has drawn national attention.
