TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - A new set of large art banners will grace the walls of two downtown Traverse City buildings.

The Traverse City Art Banner project is decorating the sides of the Masonic Building and Talbot Building with Tuesday’s installation by Britten Studios.

Former Northwestern Michigan College art department chairman Paul Welch and a committee of artists and art supporters sought empty walls on downtown buildings and asked building owners to allow them to be used as outdoor galleries.

The Dennos Museum Center is a project partner. The banners will hang for several months and plans call for other displays.

The new banners come as film aficionados converge on Traverse City. The popular northern Michigan tourism destination is home to the annual Traverse City Film Festival, which starts Tuesday and runs through Sunday.
