WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A North Carolina truck driver police say was behind the wheel of a rig that pinned and killed a woman in Massachusetts has pleaded not guilty to motor vehicle homicide and other charges.

Gary Shray, of Oriental, was released on personal recognizance at his arraignment Monday.

Authorities say Shray was driving his 18-wheeler in Worcester on May 14 when he pulled over to allow a fire truck to pass. When he tried to take a right toward Interstate 290 he knocked over a street light, which forced 24-year-old Sarah Ewing, of Hudson, and a friend jump toward the truck. Ewing was trapped under the truck’s rear wheels.

Police say Shray was not impaired.

Shray tells The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/1Kv9FIp ) he is “truly sorry” for what he called a “freak accident.”
