July 28—A car carrier hauling eight vehicles caught fire along Route 93 in front of Berger Chrysler Jeep Dodge and Ram dealership in Hazle Township early Monday morning.

Firefighters from Hazle Township and West Hazleton responded around 4:19 a.m. after a passing motorist stopped to tell the driver that his carrier was on fire, Hazle Chief Scott Kostician said.

The driver, who is from Florida, was parked in front of the dealership about an hour before being alerted, he said. He was able to save the tractor and three of the vehicles he was hauling.

Three vehicles burned and two others sustained significant heat damage, he said.

The fire appears to have started with a mechanical malfunction on the carrier, Kostician said.

Jeffrey Berger of Berger Family Dealerships said the carrier was en route to the dealership when something on the truck caught fire. The dealership did not lose any vehicles, as the vehicles being hauled are the responsibility of the carrier, he said.

Berger was thankful that no one was injured and there was no additional damage.

American Patient Transport Systems Inc. was also on the scene Monday morning. Later, tow trucks from Zeiner’s were on the scene removing the damaged vehicles from the carrier.
