ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A woman outside an Alaska prison demanded the release of inmates and shot herself in the head when the demands were not met.

Alaska State Troopers say 31-year-old Amanda Bee of North Pole fatally shot herself just before 5 p.m. Monday outside Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward as several Department of Corrections officers watched.

Troopers say Bee showed up with a gun at the perimeter of the prison and said she would kill herself if convicted killers were not released.

The officers called troopers. Bee shot herself just before troopers arrived.

She was rushed to a Seward hospital but died four hours later.

The state medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.

Seward is 75 miles south of Anchorage. North Pole is 14 miles southeast of Fairbanks.
