LEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an SUV crashed into the Chippewa River after going past the end of a dead-end road, killing the driver and his passenger.

The Midland County sheriff’s department says the SUV went over a street sign and through heavy brush in Lee Township on Tuesday night before landing upside down in the water.

The department says the 30-year-old Isabella County driver and his passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities on Wednesday worked to identify the passenger and said that names would be released after both were identified.

Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
