LAKE CITY, Fla. (AP) - A Columbia County corrections officer has been accused of lying to justify spraying an inmate in the face with chemical agents.

The Florida Department of Corrections announced Tuesday that Adrian S. Hill has been charged with battery and falsifying records in connection with a July 23 altercation between Hill and 18-year-old inmate Phillip Alderman Jr. at Lake City Correctional Institution.

According to the arrest affidavit, Hill said he sprayed the inmate because the prisoner refused to return to his cell. Authorities, however, say security footage shows that the inmate complied with the officer’s orders and Hill sprayed him anyway.

The inmate’s condition has not been released.

Hill surrendered to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. He has been fired from the agency. Jail records do not indicate if Hill has an attorney.
