BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama wildlife officials have announced dates for deer hunting at Oak Mountain near Birmingham.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said in a statement that bow hunting dates have been set for Nov. 1 through Jan. 31. Officials say hunting will be permitted on weekdays and three weekends in January.

Officials say the hunting program was established by several state agencies to help control the deer population at Oak Mountain.

Officials say surveys conducted at the park showed the herd’s feeding pattern was damaging flowers, trees and shrubs - which was negatively impacting other animals at the park. Wildlife officials say more plants have survived since the hunts were implemented.
