PHOENIX (AP) - Former Buckeye Police Chief Dan Saban is challenging six-term incumbent Joe Arpaio in next year’s race for Maricopa County sheriff.

In all, five candidates have filed papers saying they’ll seek the post.

The Republican field consists of Saban, Arpaio and Roger Baldwin.

Democrat John Rowan and Independent Kenneth Wayne Baker also have joined the race.

Saban unsuccessfully challenged Arpaio in 2004 and 2008.

The 2008 campaign was marked by a scandal in which a group run by Arpaio aides gave $100,000 to the Arizona Republican Party, which gave some of the money to another group that ran a TV ad attacking Saban.

An Arpaio aide refused to reveal the group’s donors, but relented as part of a settlement of a civil campaign complaint.
