CLAYTON, Wash. (AP) - A fire that started in a Stevens County home quickly spread Wednesday, destroying one home and temporarily closing U.S. 395 near Clayton.

Chief Mike Bucy with Stevens County Fire District 1 says firefighters were able to limit the fire to four acres. It was under control by evening though not contained.

Bucy says a homeowner was using a torch to make repairs to a rental home. He took a break next door and soon noticed smoke billowing from the rental home.

The chief says winds soon whipped the flames from the house into the trees and the fire quickly spread. Bucy says that’s when they called in air resources and other help.

The fire burned on both sides of the highway about 2 miles north of Clayton. The highway was closed for several hours between Clayton and Loon Lake but reopened Wednesday night.
