CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - The founder of a large transportation company based in Cedar Rapids has died.

CRST International, once known as Cedar Rapids Steel Transport, says Herald “Smitty” Smith Jr. died Monday at his home in eastern Wisconsin following a brief illness. He was 91.

Smith founded the company in 1955, using a chicken coop for office space. He grew the company through the acquisition of other carriers.

Smith stepped down as company president in 1977 but remained chairman of the board. John Smith, Herald’s son and current company chairman, says his father taught him the value of persistence and hard work.

Smith is survived by his wife, four adult children and several grandchildren. An obituary in the Door County Daily News says an open house will be held Saturday in Ellison Bay.
