EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (AP) - A 16-year-old Missouri youth has drowned after being pulled from the surf off a North Carolina beach.

Police tell local media outlets that Marvin Scott of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, was visiting Emerald Isle Beach on a church retreat at the time of the Tuesday evening accident.

Authorities say Scott and a 13-year-old boy with the group were hit by a large wave and carried from the beach by a rip current. Two people on the beach pulled the 13-year-old back to shore.

Rescue crews from the town launched a personal water craft and found Scott about 50 yards from shore about 25 minutes later.

Authorities say a Marine Corps helicopter in the area on a training exercise flew Scott to a hospital where he later died.
