ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - The new speaker of the New York state Assembly is continuing his tour of the upstate with a series of events in Ithaca.

Carl Heastie plans to meet with local officials, business owners and residents during his visit on Wednesday. He is also scheduled tour an elementary school’s Pre-K program and take a tour of Cornell University with university President Elizabeth Garrett.

Heastie, a Bronx Democrat, was elected speaker earlier this year by the Assembly’s Democratic majority.

Heastie visited the North Country and Syracuse earlier this month. He has said the tour is part of an effort to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing the state’s different regions.
