CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A New York City correction department investigator has been arrested on child pornography charges.

Federal prosecutors say 61-year-old Fernando Clarke was arrested Wednesday on Long Island.

Authorities say he used peer-to-peer computer software to download illicit photo and videos of young girls engaged in sex acts.

Court papers say Clarke told investigators he knew viewing the videos was illegal but needed to learn more about juvenile victims for his job.

He told federal agents that watching the videos helped him during interviews with drug smuggling suspects.

It was not clear whether he had a lawyer who could comment on the arrest.

A spokesman for the city’s Department of Correction did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
